In my last blog I wrote about how ViewTraffic.info could be used to help other users find out about traffic-related issues which wouldn’t normally be picked up. Well just to give you some examples of how webcam technology, just like ViewTraffic.info’s, can be used to help people (and animals) in trouble – at times to save their lives, have a look at the links below.

There’s been a lot of press made in recent months about CCTV footage and how it could assist in helping
resolve crimes. What’s being proposed is that any person sat at home can zoom into a particular location and detect the occurrence of any possible crime activity. Obviously there are many counter-arguments to the validity of such a service, namely the creation of a spy culture but then again there are plenty of benefits.

increase road safety. By means of television and radio advertisements the aim is to use hard-hitting messages in order to persuade drivers to drive slower. But will it work?

If you were to be asked what a good road speed deterrent was perhaps you’d answer road bumps, traffic lights or even potholes. Yes that’s right – potholes. A council in
Essex reckons this could act as a viable method to achieve a ‘natural traffic calming’ effect. But surely there’s got to be a better alternative?

…maybe not. It may sound like some more anti-Google ranting but I’m going to disagree. Google, generally, is brilliant. Google search was revolutionary, its monetising programs simplistic and easy to use and more recently its browser looks great. However, no one’s perfect. Google Street View is an excellent service if you are going to a certain location, which perhaps you’ve never visited before, and need a clearer picture of what to expect. I have used it once and must say it worked well. However that was because the imagery and the real state of play of that location hadn’t changed much. That’s where the issue is.
